Jose A. Meraz, 29, was arrested on multiple charges, including elude, DUII, reckless endangering, reckless driving and drug charges, said Sgt. Jeff Wheeler with the Marion County Sheriff's Office.
Meraz also had an outstanding warrant out for his arrest.
The incident began when a Marion County Sheriff's deputy attempted to stop Meraz for suspected DUII at Lancaster Drive in Salem, but the suspect wouldn’t stop, Wheeler said. The deputy followed the suspect for over 8 miles until Meraz drove back to his apartment complex and allegedly crashed into the side of the apartment.
Meraz then attempted to flee on foot, but was caught, according to Wheeler.
The apartment that he crashed into sustained an unknown amount of damage to the exterior wall and also the interior wall of the bedroom inside.
“The collision into the wall produced enough force to move the child’s bed inside the bedroom away from they wall by several feet,” Wheeler said. “Thank goodness the child that normally sleeps in the bed was away at her mothers for Mother’s Day weekend.”
