Teen accused of killing toddler niece in juvenile court
11:50 AM PDT on Wednesday, April 30, 2008
SALEM, Ore. -- A 13-year-old girl accused of killing her 16-month-old niece at her grandfather's home in Salem Sunday night will remain in juvenile jail until a July court appearance.
Rosita Carbajal, 13, appeared in juvenile court Wednesday, but still may be prosecuted as an adult.
Investigators said they believe Ruby Navarro-Carbajal died from inflicted traumatic brain injury. An autopsy was conducted on Monday but the official cause of death was still pending, police said.
Court records with details in the case remained sealed.
Relatives brought Ruby to the Salem Hospital on Sunday. She was not breathing and was later pronounced dead, according to Courtland Geyer with the Marion County District Attorney’s Office.
Relatives were babysitting little Ruby overnight and her mother was not at the residence, Geyer said.
Monday night, Salem detectives arrested Carbajal for murder and lodged her at the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center.
Carbajal was scheduled for arraignment on Wednesday morning.
