Wilberger murder suspect pleads not guilty in Oregon courtroom
02:03 PM PDT on Wednesday, April 9, 2008
SANTA FE -- The man accused of killing Brooke Wilberger appeared in Oregon court Wednesday for the first time since he was named as a suspect in the case.
Joel Courtney, 41, is accused of murder, kidnapping and rape in the disappearance of Wilberger, a 19-year-old college student who vanished from Corvallis in May 2004. Her body has never been found.
He is also accused of trying to kidnap two other woman in Oregon that same day.

Courtney was taken to the Benton County Jail in Albany on Tuesday. Then, he was arraigned in court on Wednesday morning, where he pleaded not guilty to 14 counts against him.
Benton County District Attorney John Haroldson said Courtney would face 14 counts including murder, rape, kidnapping and sex abuse in the Wilberger case.
In addition to that, Haroldson said Courtney faces charges for allegedly trying to kidnap, rape and kill two other victims in Oregon. Investigators did not release many details in those cases, but the charges included attempted murder, attempted kidnapping rape and sex abuse on victims around the same age as Wilberger.

Courtney was arrested in New Mexico for an attack on a college student in Santa Fe in 2004. He was recently sentenced to 19 years in prison in that case.
Investigators eventually uncovered evidence tying him to the Wilberger case.
Earlier this month a New Mexico judge ordered Courtney to be returned to Oregon for trial after he tried to fight extradition.
Benton County prosecutors said they will seek the death penalty.
