ALBANY, Ore. -- An Albany man was arrested for trying to kidnap and kill his ex-girlfriend in broad daylight Monday.

Around 2:30 in the afternoon 9-1-1 callers told police a man was dragging a woman down the street by her hair on the 700 block of SW College Park Drive.

Detectives said 47-year-old James Culbertson had recently broken up with the woman when he armed himself with a pistol and a shotgun and waited at her house.

Police said as soon as she got home Culbertson confronted her in the street, putting a gun to her head and started beating her in the driveway, threatening to kill her.

The victim was able to fight back until a friend of the victim’s arrived and subdued Culbertson. Soon after police got to the scene and arrested Culbertson for assault, burglary, kidnapping and attempted murder.

While searching the suspect’s home later Monday night, investigators said they found guns and an unidentified piece of military ordinance. The Oregon State Police bomb unit was called out to dispose of that.
