08:12 AM PDT on Monday, April 7, 2008
Two intentionally set fires destroyed a portable toilet and damaged an underground parking stair structure and a second portable toilet at Capitol Mall Sunday.
Oregon State Police
Burnt blue plastic is all that remains after a fire was set inside a portable toilet at Capitol Mall.
Reports of the first fire came in around 2:50 p.m. The Salem Fire Department responded, but the first portable toilet was completely destroyed when crews arrived. A stair access area was also involved in this fire and had approximately $15,000 of damage according to the Department of Administrative Services.
The second fire was reported around 3:35 p.m. Firefighters were able to put it out before there was major damage.
Oregon State Police are investigating these fires and have determined in both cases someone set the fires inside the portable toilets.
Details about how these fires were started are not being released because this is an active investigation. Anyone with information about the fires should call Oregon State Police at 800-452-7888.
