7-11 customer scares off would-be robber

03:34 PM PDT on Monday, March 10, 2008

By TERESA BLACKMAN, kgw.com Staff

A brave customer thwarted a would-be robber armed with a knife in a Woodburn convenience store Sunday, police said.

Watch KGW report

A man was waving a pocket knife inside the 7-11 store on Highway 99E and Lincoln street when the customer confronted him.

“He said, 'this is a robbery, I want your money!' I told him, no, you ain’t getting no money,” David Rhodes told KGW.

Then, Rhodes said the would-be robber told him to get out of the way and swore obscenities at him.

“So I took off my hat to defend myself.”

Surveillance video shows the armed man with his back to the camera apparently arguing with Rhodes and the intimidation must have worked because moments later, the suspect fled without any money.

Rhodes ran after him but the suspect still got away. Even though he's a father of three and merely a customer in the store, he doesn't regret taking the risk.

“If it happened again, I’d probably do the same thing, I probably would, just because I can’t see anybody stealing or robbing or anything like that,” Rhodes said.

Meantime, the suspect is still on the loose. He's described as an Hispanic man, about 5’6” tall, with a stocky to heavy build and in his 20s. He was wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt, black pants, white tennis shoes and a blue bandana over his face.

Anyone with information that may help crack the case was asked to call police.
