FBI tracking anthrax threat-maker in Albany
06:04 PM PST on Monday, March 3, 2008
ALBANY, Ore. -- Linn County officials closed the courthouse in downtown Albany Monday after an anthrax threat was found and later discovered to be a hox.
Commissioner Roger Nyquist said a county employee found writing on a courthouse door and some packages inside early Monday morning that indicated a threat.
The message scrawled on the door read "Don't touch the letter you'll be sorry, somewhere in this building anthrax lies in wait."
On another window, a message read "I was in court Friday, find me please!"
Army scientists tested the packages and said they were 99.5 percent sure the substances inside were not anthrax.
Initial tests found the samples to be a sugar-like substance. The FBI said definitive results will be available in 48 hours.
Lt. Col. Steve Ferrell said the OANG unit's frequent training for anthrax scenarios over the past several years played a big part in getting the situationresolved.
"Anthrax training seems to be the most common scenario," he said. "They've done it quite a few times, so they're very proficient in this type of scenario."
Federal and state officials were also on the scene. So far there were no suspects and the courthouse was expected to reopen Tuesday.
