Detectives arrest Redmond man for 1986 murder
12:38 PM PST on Thursday, February 14, 2008
SALEM, Ore. (AP) -- Detectives say they've solved a 21-year-old case with the arrest of a Central Oregon man on a murder charge.
Marion County Sheriff Russ Isham says 34-year-old Edward Jeffrey was gunned down in the driveway of his rural Salem home in December 1986 as he was coming home from work.
Leads turned cold and it wasn’t until more than 20 years later that a Marion County task force identified 48-year-old Patrick McCreary as a suspect.
He was arrested in Redmond and arraigned in Salem Thursday.
Isham said the cold case was cracked by a team of four retired detectives, including one from the FBI. They have commissions as special deputies and work for a full-time detective in the sheriff's office.
Isham and his deputies didn't say what led them to McCreary, although a department spokesman says McCreary had been mentioned when the case was investigated the first time around.
