SALEM, Ore. -- Several hundred Hispanics rallied at the state Capitol to protest pending legislation that would require proof of legal residence to get an Oregon driver's license.

Meanwhile, about 80 people who favor the law stood on the Capitol steps with signs denouncing illegal immigration.

Oregon is one of only a handful of states that does not require such proof.

Oregon House and Senate transportation committees are working on draft legislation. But it is not yet clear what will go to the Legislature for a vote.

Supporters of the legislation say it is step toward complying with the federal Real ID Act.
