PORTLAND -- Two Portland Police officers went flying through a convenience store window with a suspect they were trying to wrestle to the ground in Northeast Portland Wednesday morning, investigators said.

The window was shattered during the scuffle.

Officers Rodney Murdock and Randy Brandt were both injured, along with suspect James Lewis, police said.

Murdock said it all started with a traffic stop around 10 a.m.; he was trying to pull Lewis over because he did not have license plates on his Izuzu Trooper.

He said Lewis, 31, stopped his SUV and then stepped out of the

Trooper and walked into the 7-11 store nearby, despite orders from the officer to stay put.

Murdock called for backup and officer Brandt arrived to help him out. Then, investigators said the pair went into the 7-11, located near the intersection of NE 21st Avenue and Broadway, and tried to arrest Lewis but he put up quite a fight.

“Lewis was tased by officers with little or no effect. During the struggle, the officers and Lewis went through the plate-glass window of the 7-11,” said Cathe Kent with the Portland Police Bureau.

Officer Brandt had to get stitches to close up a deep cut on his forehead. His fellow officer suffered several cuts on his hand and the glass even sliced his police vest.

Lewis suffered a large cut on his back and was transported to Portland Adventist hospital for treatment.

Kent said Lewis has an extensive arrest history with Portland including several charges of assaulting police, resisting arrest and eluding police.

Once he’s released from the hospital, Lewis will be charged with failing to obey a police officer, eluding an officer, resisting arrest and two counts of assaulting a public safety officer. There was already an outstanding felony warrant for his arrest on prior elude charges, Kent said.

Officer Murdock is a seven-year veteran with the Portland Police Bureau and officer Brandt has been with the bureau for 19 years.
