10:49 AM PDT on Friday, August 15, 2008
Three men are behind bars in connection with a stabbing in Gresham.
It happened 11:30pm Thursday in the parking lot of the McDonalds restaurant in the 18300 block of SE Stark Street.
“Gresham Police were called to a report of a fight in the parking lot. Initial reports were that the fight involved six males, some of which had knives,” said Officer Adam Baker with the Gresham Police Department.
Moments later, police were told that one of the people had been stabbed during the fight. When police arrived, they found one person who had been stabbed.
Carla Coleman lives nearby with her family and said she couldn’t believe another incident occurred in her neighborhood. “I am going to move to a house in North Portland. I’ve been here for nine years from Chicago and it’s crazy; police, shooting, the news all the time,” she said.
The victim, Francisco Ascencio-Morales, 28, of Gresham, had one wound to the chest, two wounds to the abdomen and one to the arm, police said.
He was alert and talking to officers on the scene. Medics treated Ascencio-Morales and transported him by ambulance to the hospital for treatment of his injuries. As of 7:25am Friday, his condition was listed as stable.
The East Metro Gang Enforcement Team responded after witnesses reported that they heard some of the people involved yell, “south side” during the fight, police said.
Gresham Police Detectives, a Crime Scene Technician, and a K-9 team all helped in the investigation.
Police questioned several people on scene and arrested Jose Morales-Barrajas, 18, a transient. Juan Ignacio Medina-Cornejo, 23, of Portland and Salvador Remigio-Montelongo, 25, of Gresham. All three were charged with one count of Assault I, a measure 11 felony. All three men were transported to Multnomah County County Detention Center for lodging on $50,000 bail.
