PORTLAND, Ore. -- Coast Guard officials have been working with state and national environmental regulators to make sure an asphalt spill on I-84 east of Portland Wednesday does not contaminate the Columbia River.
Approximately 3,000 gallons of hot asphalt spilled onto the road when a tanker truck flipped Wednesday morning, according to Oregon Department of Transportation.

A small amount of the hot asphalt reportedly entered the McCord Creek, the Coast Guard said.
The asphalt that got into McCord Creek solidified immediately, according to the state, but preventative measures have been taken to make sure none makes its way into the Columbia.
Contractors were removing debris from the spill around the creek. Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife said no fish in the creek were affected by the spill.
