Ramps connecting Interstate 84 and Interstate 205 reopened Friday morning after a night of partial cleanup following a derailment on tracks that run alongside I-84.

Further cleanup was still needed.

Union Pacific crews worked through the night to remove derailed cars and repair rail tracks.

Crews will continue to work through Friday and I-84 west bound ramps to I-205 north bound and south bound will be closed Friday night from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Only the ramps will be affected by the closure; I-84 and I-205 will be open to traffic, transportation officials said.

A freight train derailment in northeast Portland Thursday morning caused traffic chaos and closures but no one was injured, authorities said.

Six cars carrying lumber tipped over and more cars were off the track but still upright. Some of the train cars on the overpass were leaning.

Thirty six train cars derailed, according to Union Pacific spokeswoman Zoe Richmond. That may include a few tankers, but they were not carrying any hazardous material, she said.

The cause of the derailment was under investigation.

Neighbor Leonard Smith, who lives about 600 yards away, heard the derailment and said it felt like an earthquake.
