A North Portland neighborhood is on alert after a home burglary early Tuesday morning.

Just minutes after the suspect allegedly broke into the home through an unlocked bathroom window, police officers roamed the 2800 block of North Killingsworth.

“I was in the kitchen, walked to the front of the house, and saw a police officer with a dog going between the house and the apartments over there,” said Arlene Young, a neighbor.

Investigators tell Newschannel 8 the suspect tore through the living room, then headed for the back of the house.  That’s when a woman who lived inside appeared from behind her bedroom door.

“There’s nothing to indicate that this guy knew anybody was inside.  Matter of fact, when he saw the victim he bolted,” added Sergeant Brian Schmautz from the Portland Police Bureau.

“It’s awful.  It makes me sick.  I can’t imagine it.  I don’t know what I would’ve done,” said Cheri Clark, who had somebody break into her house less than two months ago.

“Somebody threw a rock through our back window, came in and took electronics, jewelry, my purse, I had left it at home,” added Clark.

Recent statistics show that there have been more than thirty burglaries in the area over the past year, but Sergeant Schmautz said numbers are down twelve to fourteen percent compared to this time last year.

“Ends up not being consolation for somebody who wakes-up and sees a man walking into her bedroom,” said Schmautz.

In the meantime, police are looking for an African American male, in his 40’s, wearing a puffy green jacket, jeans, and a black beanie cap.

“I still feel safe.  It’s a great neighborhood.  I’m not moving, but I hope they catch them,” exclaimed Clark.
