PORTLAND, Ore. -- Kelly Hedden’s left eye is swollen shut and purple and her eye socket is broken two days after she was kicked in the face trying to stop an attack on her boyfriend.

Victim describes attack near school

“They were on the ground when I turned around and the kid’s foot went ‘Bam!’ right in my face.

It happened last Saturday afternoon. Hedden, 20, and her boyfriend, Tarl White, decided to take a walk on the field at Menlo Park Elementary School at N.E. 128th Street and Glisan.

Hedden said they passed two white teenagers, about 6 feet tall and 180 pounds. Hedden said their girlfriends said they were drunk.

“First they asked if we wanted to buy weed, and we just kept walking,” said Hedden. She said they then began to insult her, and her boyfriend turned toward them and asked them what they said.

“They were just sitting right on the edge of the fence and the guy just ran at me,” said White. He said he began wrestling with him on the grass, and Hedden came over calling for White to stop. That’s when she said a foot came out of nowhere and kicked her in the face.

White said he was able to subdue the teens and the couple left to call for help. By the time police arrived, the attackers were gone. Hedden went to the hospital.

Portland Police spokesman Sgt. Brian Schmautz said officers are hoping for information from the public that will lead them to the suspects.

In the meantime, he said that officers don’t recommend that citizens fight back in violent situations, that the consequences can be dangerous.
