Chavez street renaming postponed again until July

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Hundreds of people packed Portland City Hall Tuesday night to testify on whether to rename a stretch of 39th Avenue after labor leader Cesar Chavez.
A final decision was expected Tuesday night; however, city leaders said they would conclude the process and the renaming proposal would be accepted or rejected by July 8.
Mayor Sam Adams' spokesperson, Roy Kaufman, said city code requires two readings of any proposed ordinance. Tuesday's reading was to allow ample time for public testimony. City council will vote after the next reading.
Many of the commissioners said they’d been so busy with other issues that they had not yet made a final decision.
Last month, city planners recommended renaming 39th Avenue over Broadway and Grand avenues.
Opponents worried about costs and what they called a haphazard renaming process.
