Bend woman in hot water over dirty laundry

BEND, Ore. – A Bend woman’s environmental conscience has landed her in hot water and garnered media attention from the Wall Street Journal.

Susan Taylor, 55, recently strung a clothesline in her backyard and hung up sheets to dry.

In doing so, she violated the regulations of the subdivision in which lives -- Awbrey Butte – which does not permit outdoor clotheslines, the journal reported.

The development's managers threatened legal action and that move split the community.

The developer and many residents argue that clotheslines are unsightly and don’t fit the mountain setting.

Taylor and her supporters argue that clotheslines help combat climate change by avoiding electricity consumption.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Awbrey Butte Architectural Review Committee addressed a letter to Taylor asking that she “discontinue this practice by July 9, 2007, to avoid legal action which will be taken after that date."

In August, Taylor made a fabric screen to cover her clothesline but the subdivision committee said it didn't blend in with the home or the native surroundings.

Taylor finally started hanging laundry in her garage. She told WSJ she may move.
