Five injured when over-crowded car smashes into tree near Bend

Five people were sent to a Bend hospital on Wednesday after the over-crowded vehicle they were in lost control and rammed into a large tree.

Police say seven people were in the compact car when it crashed.
It happened on Old Bend Redmond Highway around 12:45. State Police say 19-year-old Richard Lopes was driving his Honda Civic with six other passengers in the car.
The cramped car crashed into a tree after police say, Lopes missed a turn while speeding.
State Troopers said several passengers were sitting on other passengers' laps when the car crashed.
Five of Lopes' six passengers, ranging in ages from 15 to 20, were injured. Lopes received only minor injuries.
No tickets were issued. The case was referred to the Deschutes County District Attorney's Office.
