Good Samaritan covers over swastika in Sisters
07:31 AM PDT on Wednesday, August 29, 2007
SISTERS, Ore. -- Vandals painted swastikas on buildings and roadways in this Western-themed town in Central Oregon, the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office said.
The words "white power" were painted next to a giant swastika on the side of one business, The Hitchin' Post. But the graffiti was quickly covered over by Brian Nye, the owner of a paint company.
Nye spotted the graffiti on his way to church Sunday. He went home to mix paint and then returned.
"The community has been good to me for the past six years, so that's what motivated me to do it -- just giving back to the community," Nye told KTVZ-TV.
Thanks to Nye's paint job, a visitor would never know that a swastika had been on the building. But you can still see some of the other graffiti splashed across Sisters over the weekend, including a swastika painted on am empty brick building.
Parker Bennett has seen the symbol the past two days on his to work, and has no idea why someone would paint it. "Someone could do it as a joke, but I don't know why it would be funny," he said.
No arrests have been made, said sheriff's Deputy Russell Stanage, who added that anyone with information about the graffiti should contact authorities.
