BEND, Ore. -- Searchers recovered the body of a 60-year-old hiker who died in a fall Saturday morning at Smith Rock State Park

According to KTVZ.com, it took hours to recover the body from the steep, rugged area.

Carl Martens was hiking the Misery Ridge Loop Trail and had stopped while the rest of his group continued on. Later, when the hikers couldn't find Martens, they called the park's camp host.

Officials told KTVZ he had fallen about 275 feet off of a rock outcropping, tumbling down a steep slope.

Searchers found Martens unconscious with a head wound on the "Misery Trail," but he was not breathing.

"Any time you're performing a rescue or recovery mission at Smith Rock, you've got to be very careful about your surroundings, so we don't have another tragedy," Deschutes County Sheriff Larry Blanton, told the station.
