Firefighting plane makes emergency landing on highway
12:37 PM PDT on Tuesday, July 1, 2008
BEND, Ore. (AP) -- A fire-spotting plane had to make an emergency landing on a Central Oregon highway after a reported fuel leak.
Highway 20 near Bend was shut down in both directions for seven hours on Monday after the unexpected landing.
The pilot and a passenger were treated at the scene for injuries and taken to medical facilities, said Carol Connolly of the Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch Center in Prineville.
She says the two were trying to spot fires ignited by recent thunderstorms.
The pilot managed to get the plane down in the eastbound lane after missing trees, power lines and a barn.
