Thomas Beatie wrote a column in ‘The Advocate,’ a well-known gay and lesbian magazine about his experiences as a transgender man carrying a baby.
In the article, Beatie describes deciding to go on testosterone therapy and undergo chest reconstructive surgery about eight years ago, in an effort to become a man. But he said he chose to keep his female reproductive organs.
Now, Thomas has facial hair and looks like a man, but he also has a large, protruding belly. Beatie says in ‘The Advocate’ column that he was artificially inseminated with a donor’s sperm after the couple learned that his wife, Nancy could not have a baby due to severe endometriosis.
“Ten years ago, when Nancy and I became a couple, the idea of us having a child was more dream than plan. I always wanted to have children,” Beatie said.
Beatie told 'The Advocate' he was able to become pregnant after halting his testosterone injections. But the couple could not find a doctor who supported them, so they eventually purchased anonymous donor vials from a cryogenic sperm bank and resorted to home insemination.
“Our situation sparks legal, political, and social unknowns. We have only begun experiencing opposition from people who are upset by our situation. Doctors have discriminated against us, turning us away due to their religious beliefs,” Beatie said in ‘The Advocate.’
Now, Beatie said their baby girl appears to be healthy and their estimated due date is July 3, 2008.
“Our situation ultimately will ask everyone to embrace the gamut of human possibility and to define for themselves what is normal,” Beatie said in 'The Advocate' magazine.
