Bend city budget shortfall hits $20 million

BEND, Ore. -- The city budget in Bend is coming up short -- about $20 million short.

The biggest hits are in planning, building and engineering fees, along with franchise fees and ambulance and firefighting revenue.

Planning fees are expected to be down 50 percent from expectations, or $2.1 million this year, climbing to almost $3 million for next year.

A big chunk of the shortfall comes from the slump in the housing market.

The city already has laid off 10 workers this year and not filled 25 vacancies. Bend has also made other cuts in services, and in vehicle and equipment purchases.
