Uber-Eats launches in Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. -- If you live in the Portland metro area, Uber will now deliver food from your favorite restaurant right to your door. The UberEATS app launched Tuesday at 10 a.m.

UberEATS Portland customers will be able to select food from more than 100 notable area restaurants, including Whiskey Soda Lounge, Pok Pok Noi, Ataula, Ate-Oh-Ate, Deschutes Brewery, Dove Vivi, Ecliptic Brewing, Kure Juice Bar, Wolf & Bear’s and many more.

Food prices are set by the restaurants. Uber adds a $3.99 delivery fee. Tips are not included in the delivery fee, but they are neither required nor expected.

Cheryl’s on 12th is also one of the businesses participating. Owner Ed Casey said he's used Uber in the past. When Uber came to him and asked about participating in UberEats, Casey didn’t hesitate.

“We’ve used third-party platforms, local ones that have done some significant business for us, but I expect Uber is going to far outreach that. They have such a great database,” Casey said. “Uber can literally get it there within minutes.”

It works like this. Download the UberEATS app to your smartphone. It's a separate app from Uber’s ride-sharing one.

Next, select from more than 100 area restaurants including Cheryl’s. An Uber driver will deliver to the Portland metro area.

“I’ve used UberEATS a whole lot when I travel, so it's a pleasant surprise it's coming to Portland,” said Mark Starkey, a Cheryl’s customer.

As for Casey, he’s already filling UberEATS orders.

“They order the food, we produce it, in four to five minutes the driver is here, almost immediately, to pick it up,” Casey said.

As with the original Uber app, customers will sometimes see surge prices during a busy time.
