PORTLAND, Ore. -- Another Portland landmark is likely to be razed in the next few months.
The Sellwood location of Mike’s Drive-In will see its lease expire at the end of the year, says owner Todd Freeman.
“It’s an icon,” said Doug Lange, who was just finishing up his veggie burger Monday afternoon. “Their frosty shakes are the best.”
“The food’s delicious, the same lady’s been working there forever,” said Loretta Ebert, who lives in the building across the street.
But Ebert said she’s devastated by the news, because the lot is slated to become more new apartments.
Two other large apartment buildings are already under construction within a block of Mike’s, and Ebert fears the increased density will make Sellwood “unlivable.”
Freeman said the thought of losing the Sellwood Mike’s makes him very sad. He said he’ll try to take as many employees as he can over to his other two locations in Milwaukie and Oregon City.
Mike’s Drive-In Sellwood has always been a community asset, sponsoring dozens of youth sports teams over the years, and offering free ice cream to any baseball team that comes in after a game in uniform.
