PORTLAND, Ore. — Northern Oregon is in for a wet weekend with snow levels dropping as low as 2,000 feet.

The mountains should see a good accumulation of snow through Sunday, with the Cascade snow levels dropping to 3,000 feet Thursday morning and close to 2,000 feet later in the day.

"Snow levels have dropped below the Cascade passes and will remain between 2,000 and 3,000 feet through the weekend," said KGW Meteorologist Rod Hill on Thursday. "Today, Friday and Saturday could see 4 inches each day at pass level and possibly more.

"The biggest snow day will likely be Sunday when 8 inches or more could fall. Current forecast models show snow levels below 4,000 feet most days through next Friday, giving ski resorts a much needed period of fresh snow," Hill added.

The Portland metro area will see steady rain Thursday and showers through the weekend before a significant storm system reaches the area Saturday night.

"Portland and Salem will see colder air aloft feed heavy showers with small hail and possible rumbles of thunder Thursday afternoon," Hill said. "Numerous showers are in the forecast through Saturday, followed by increasing Sunday rainfall."
