Local bobsled athletes named to U.S. national team

It is the first national team berth for Ryan Bailey, a 2007 graduate of Douglas McKay High School in Salem. Sam Michener, who graduated in 2005 from Barlow High School in Gresham, is a returning national team veteran.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Two local athletes were among 15 athletes named to the U.S. National Bobsled Team on Saturday.

USA Bobsled & Skeleton (USABS) named three pilots as well a pool of 12 push athletes who will compete for three pusher positions on the squad that will compete at the PyeongChang Winter Games.

Portland's Ryan Bailey and Gresham's Sam Michener are among the 12 push athletes. It is the first national team berth for Bailey, a 2007 graduate of Douglas McKay High School in Salem. Michener, who graduated in 2005 from Barlow High School in Gresham, is a returning national team veteran.

Bailey ran track in the 2012 London Olympic Games, but has been competing in bobsled since 2016.

On Friday in Lake Placid, N.Y., Bailey and Michener joined Nick Cunningham and Chris Kinney to win the USA Bobsled National Team Trials race. Cunningham was one of the three pilots named to the national team, while Kinney is one of the 12 push athletes.

The PyeongChang Olympics begin Feb. 9, 2018 in Pyeongchang County, South Korea.
