WASHOUGAL, Wash. -- One person died and two were injured in a head-on collision Sunday evening in the 36500 block of Northeast Washougal River Road.

Police identified the victim as 21-year-old Joshua Schmid of Vancouver. His passenger, 21-year-old McKenzie Laird of Vancouver, was seriously injured, as was the driver of the other car, 23-year-old Zachary Hartman of Washougal.

Emergency crews were dispatched about 8:30 p.m. and came upon a scene with two heavily damaged cars, according to the Clark County Sheriff's Office.

Witnesses told police that a white Subaru sedan, driven by Schmid, was traveling north when it struck a Kia sedan head-on in the southbound lane, police said. Evidence at the scene indicates the collision happened at a curve in the road.

Witnesses told Clark County Traffic detectives that Schmid was passing other northbound cars prior to the crash.

"Washougal River Road is a winding, two-lane roadway," said Clark County Traffic Unit Sgt. Alex Schoening. "Most of the length of this roadway is marked for no passing by double solid yellow center lines."

Any other contributing factors in the crash are currently being investigated.

The roadway was closed until early Monday morning.
