Teen seriously injured, another teen charged with felony hit-and-run

The driver was charged with felony hit-and-run, second-degree assault and reckless driving.

SALEM, Ore. -- A teenage boy sustained potentially life-threatening injuries following a crash in Salem Saturday morning. Another teen was arrested for his role in the crash.

The injured teen, a 16-year-old boy, was taken to a Portland hospital. The Marion County Sheriff's Office says he was a passenger in a Ford Explorer that went through the intersection of Elma Avenue Southeast and Mahrt Avenue Southeast and hit a Toyota pickup truck and two parked vehicles. The collision occurred just before 5 a.m.

The driver of the Ford Explorer, also a 16-year-old boy, was booked into the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center on charges of second-degree assault, reckless driving and felony hit-and-run. Responding deputies found the driver away from the crash scene.

Investigators believe the teen was driving "at a speed and manner that was reckless."

The sheriff's office said the identities of the teens will not be released.

The driver of the Toyota was taken to Salem Hospital with minor injuries.

An investigation is ongoing.
