PORTLAND, Ore. – Multnomah County and Portland city leaders are getting together to find homes for homeless families this winter with a campaign called "Home for the Holidays."
City and County leaders are asking for rental property owners, property managers, and neighbors to step up. The goal is to find homes for 40 families in 40 days.
Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler and Multnomah County Chair Deborah Kafoury said the housing crisis is hitting families hard, and there's a record number of people looking for shelter.
Those numbers are rising, in part, because it's taking longer for people to find a way to leave shelters once they get there.
The solution, leaders say, is to have more affordable units for families, which is why they are calling on landlords and property managers. And they say it’s all about partnerships.
They say similar outreach programs have also helped hundreds of homeless veterans find homes.
