Increase in theft reported on TriMet transit, police say

Police are investigating about 40 reported cases of theft that have occurred on the TriMet transit system over the past three months.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Police are investigating about 40 reported cases of theft that have occurred on the TriMet transit system over the past three months.

Most of the incidents involved a group of about five to eight juveniles taking people’s unsecured or unattended items, police said. A few instances involved cases of force, although police say no weapons have been used.

The thefts have predominantly occurred on transit along 82nd Avenue, and between the Rose Quarter Transit Center and Gateway Transit Center. The Transit Police Division has increased patrols in those areas.

Based on information received from victims, witnesses, and surveillance cameras, police have identified several suspects and anticipate arrests in the near future.

Police advise riders to keep their belongings close and to be alert while riding. They also ask riders who witness a crime to call 911.

Anyone with information about these cases or similar cases committed on TriMet transit is asked to call 503-823-3333.
