The overall list features data on complaints related to telephone calls, the internet and retail schemes.

In collecting the state's top 10 consumer complaints for 2017, the state's Consumer Protection bureau uncovered a new category.

The "travel accommodations" segment landed on the list, released Tuesday. The reason: The category includes issues related to the August 2017 solar eclipse. That includes gripes against hotels and car rental companies.

“As we celebrated the solar eclipse last year, there were companies who tried to take advantage of consumers by canceling reservations, or changing the price of hotel rooms, food and rental cars," said Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum, in a release.

"Based on the high number of complaints we received, we were ultimately able to get money back, or hotel reservations reinstated, for hundreds of individuals traveling to Oregon for the eclipse.”

The overall list features data on complaints related to telephone calls, the internet and retail schemes. One area tracked by the state generated more gripes than the other top nine categories combined.

The damage can add up to millions. In the "fraudulent entity" category, for instance, the state reported that 199 victims reported losses of $4 million. Among those, $1.5 million were comprised by uncashed counterfeit items.
