SALEM – The Oregon State Fair is under way in Salem until Labor Day and organizers said more than 9,000 activities, events, celebrations and attractions are available this year.

Live performances including Cheap Trick, The Judds and Selena Gomez are unique to this year’s fair, but many people make the trip for the tradition of it.

“Coming down here to remember when you were a kid having an ear of corn,” said Ron Kirkwood, who was at the fair Sunday with his family. “My parents were raised in the Salem area so everybody came to the fair.”

Animals have always been a foundation of the fair and now there’s a new twist: Gascar Crazy Animal Races. A goat, a sheep, a pig and a turkey battle for first place. Sunday the pig came out on top. The race was quickly becoming one of the fair’s most popular attractions.

Another new attraction is the il Circo acrobatics show, which will be performed twice daily until the fair ends.
