For years, the infamous Sunset Highway was considered the worst commute in the Portland area.

But that was then – now it’s those unlucky commuters driving between Portland and Vancouver that get stranded in the worst bottlenecks, according to statistics provided by Portland State University’s Intelligent Transportation Systems Lab.
The statistics show Interstate 5 northbound during the afternoon is the slowest rush hour commute in the area.
On the other hand, the statistics show that in the afternoon, I-5 southbound has the highest variability among Portland-area freeways, so the average commute time is less predictable.
The westbound commute on Highway 26 in the afternoon improved thanks to the widening of the highway, which was completed this summer.
The Oregon Department of Transportation says traffic in Portland is getting worse due to a growing population and lack of new roads being built.
