Supporters trying again to rename PDX street after Cesar Chavez

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Supporters leading the effort to rename a Portland street after Cesar Chavez will need to be more clinical and by-the-book this time.

KGW report on Cesar Chavez street renaming effort

The last time the Chavez renaming issue came up for Portland’s Interstate Avenue, city leaders literally made up the rules as they went along and the debate became incredibly bitter.

This time, it’s by the book.

Advocates have applied to rename all of Broadway Avenue, Grand Avenue or 39th Avenue after the migrant labor and civil rights hero.

They want something visible and high profile to honor Chavez.

The last renaming attempt was denied, but supporters said they were undeterred.

“I have a lot of respect for Cesar Chavez and we want to honor him. He's one of our heroes and we're working hard for it,” said supporter Marta Guembes.

“Now they have to go out and get 2,500 valid signatures from Portland residents in order to be further considered in the process, this process is hard,” explained Portland City Commissioner and Mayor-elect, Sam Adams.

Adams added that the application will be processed according to a city law that’s been in the books since 1989.

Signature gathering, historical significance and other criteria must be met before the issue reaches Portland City Council in about six months.
