The skateboarder who took the epic fall during the X Games that was seen around the world is setting his sights on Portland’s upcoming AST Dew Tour as his comeback performance.
Australian skateboarder Jake Brown is undergoing rehabilitation in a Los Angeles hospital after the violent crash last Thursday. He fell 45 feet onto the skateboard ramp and was knocked unconscious in front of thousands of shocked fans.
Brown told Matt Lauer during an interview on NBC’s “Today Show” Monday that he knew he was in big trouble when his skateboard flew out from under him during a high-flying trick.
Brown suffered a hairline fracture on a vertebra, a bruised liver and some internal bleeding. But despite all that he went through, Brown said he wants to get back on his board soon and he already set his sights specifically on an upcoming event in Portland.
More: Details on AST Dew Tour
The AST Dew Tour comes to Portland August 16 – 19. It’s an event filled with high-flying tricks and competitions among daredevil athletes who travel around the world competing in alternative sports including skateboarding, motocross, and BMX, among other fan favorites.
Just before Brown’s “epic slam,” as boarders call it, he completed a stunt that had never been done in competition before: Two 360-degree turns in midair. But he said the G-force took over after the daredevil maneuver and all he could do was spin around in the air, so his back would take the impact of the fall.
He told Lauer he remembers seeing the ground far below him and feeling like he had plenty of time to get in the best position possible to survive the fall, slamming the ground with his feet first, and then his backside.
It appeared to have worked. Even though the crowd went silent fearing he’d been killed, Brown woke up minutes later and then managed to get up and walk off the ramp.
