Walk Score was designed to help people who are considering moving find the most walk-friendly neighborhoods.
“With gas at $4 a gallon, there's never been a better time to live in a walkable neighborhood,” the Web site reads.
Among the nation's 40 biggest population centers, Portland finishes No. 10 for “walkability.” San Francisco was ranked No. 1 and Seattle was ranked No. 6.
People visiting the Walk Score Web site can type in a street address to see how individual neighborhoods rate. The site also gives users the opportunity to rank their own neighborhoods and share their stories in a blog.
Portland outscores most cities with popular “walkable” neighborhoods including The Pearl, Old Town/Chinatown, downtown Portland, Northwest 23rd and the Lloyd district. The Web site explained that from information shared by Portlanders, the city has seven "walkers' paradises" and 45-percent of neighborhoods have a Walk Score of 70-percent and above.
