TriMet installing security cameras at MAX stations

GRESHAM, ORE. -- TriMet will install new security cameras at its MAX light rail stations in Gresham and Downtown Portland thanks to a $560,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
“People tend not to do things they don't want to get video taped doing so it really prevents crime and if something happens you actually have the cameras for evidence,” said TriMet spokesperson Mary Fetsch.
Recently the Portland Police Bureau was able to catch a man accused of hitting and killing a pedestrian on North Interstate Ave. with the help of surveillance cameras installed on parts of the MAX Yellow Line.
Currently there are about 20 of those cameras installed at the 64 other light rail stations in the area.
While transit and law enforcement officials welcome the added security, some MAX riders expressed concerns with privacy.
