Pond skimming champs keep crowds smiling at Mt Bachelor
12:58 PM PDT on Monday, May 12, 2008
BEND, Ore. -- Mt. Bachelor will put an exclamation point on its 2007-2008 season this coming Sunday, when the resort hosts the seventh annual Liberty Bank Pond Skimming Championships.
Crews from Mt. Bachelor will excavate an 80-foot pond, four feet deep adjacent to Sunrise Lodge. They will invite athletes from around the region to test their skills crossing it.
A spokesperson for Mt. Bachelor says pond skimming combines comedy, costume and skill to represent the spring transition with entertainment and a blowout party.
They are hoping for good weather and a "great close to a great season."
Held in two rounds, athletes must reach the end of the pond to proceed to the second round, which is then judged on costume and style/technique.
Each competitor is automatically entered to win an unlimited 2008-09 season pass regardless of score.
