Portland Children's Museum turning trash into treasures

As part of its Earth Day celebration, the Oregon Children’s Museum will teach visitors how to turn trash into treasures.

Museum educators and guest performers will demonstrate how almost anything can be turned into an object of art or a useful item for around the house in events and workshops scheduled for April 19 & 20.

Here’s the schedule:

Saturday, April 19

Lanterns

10am – Noon, Age 5 and up. $5 per creation, plus Museum admission or membership. Use recycled materials to construct a beautiful hanging lantern.

Junk Bugs

10am – 4pm, Age 5 & up. Free with Museum admission or membership.

Construct creatures from recycled materials and add them to the Museum's giant paper mache tree.

Recycle Man

1 & 3pm. All ages. Free with Museum admission or membership. Peter Dubois battles waste and litter as his superhero alter ego, Recycle Man! He gives an award-winning performance that teaches families about the 3 R's: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle!

Tie Dye

1 – 3pm All ages. $5 per creation, plus Museum admission or membership. Visitors can make a groovy, one-of-a-kind lunch sack or grocery bag to reduce everyday paper waste.

Sunday, April 20

Found Time

10am – Noon. Age 5 and up. $5 per creation, plus Museum admission or membership. Construct a clever clock with found objects!

Sojourner School's Marimba Band

1 & 3pm in Play It Again Theater

All ages. Free with Museum admission or membership. Fifth and sixth grade students play lively traditional and composed dance music from Zimbabwe.

ThePortland Children's Museum is a located at 4015 SW Canyon Rd in Portland, across from the Oregon Zoo. Parking is available or the museum can also be accessed via MAX Light Rail, which has a stop nearby at the zoo.

Spring/Summer Hours: Open Daily, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission: general $7, seniors and military $6, children under 1 and museum members admitted free.
