A local program that donates school supplies to students and teachers got a high-profile guest to help spread the word about its work.

KGW weatherman Dave Salesky is surprised by Al Roker, right.

“Today” show weatherman Al Roker broadcast live from the School Supplies Warehouse in the basement of Madison High School in southeast Portland on Tuesday morning. Joining Roker was Northwest NewsChannel 8 meteorologist Dave Salesky.

It wasn’t just the guests who made the day for the program. The Tournament Golf Foundation and the Safeway Foundation presented a $15,000 check to the school supplies program. The check was from proceeds raised through the Safeway Classic.

Roker introduced the president of the Tournament Golf Foundation, Tom Maletis, who presented the check to the program.

"This year with the Portland Public School budget crisis, the needs are greater than ever for programs such as this,” Maletis said. “We are happy to continue as a supporter of this worthy program."

Schoolhouse Supplies also received a truckload full of supplies, courtesy of K-Mart and Sears, that included backpacks and DVD players.
