Oregon's Kristy Lee Cook makes it into top 8 on 'Idol'

LOS ANGELES -- Oregon's Kristy Lee Cook has survived another week on "American Idol."

The singer from the small community of Selma was one of the three lowest vote-getters, but Ramiele Malubay, 20, of Miramar, Fla., was the contestant booted from the show.
Cook was 14 when her family moved to a log house in Selma. Her parents were looking for a place that split the distance between Reno, where one daughter was a swimmer at the University of Nevada, and Eugene, where a son was a wide receiver at the University of Oregon.
Back home, Cook rides horses and stops in for country fried steak or cinnamon roll French toast at the place where Eddy cooks, the Country Folks Restaurant.
The 24-year-old Cook is one of the eight remaining finalists competing for the title and a record contract.
The southern Oregon city of Selma has only about 3,000 people, but those residents make their presence known on "American Idol" night. That's when they start dialing for hometown singer Kristy Lee Cook.
Desiree Eddy, a local cook, figures she can vote 600 times dialing as fast as she can if the toll-free phone lines don't jam in the two hours of voting after each week's performance. Since Cook comes from such a small place, Eddy figures she and the rest of town must vote twice as hard to keep her in the contest.
