A group of climbers rescued off Mt. Hood in February held a fundraiser for their rescuers at a popular Portland brewpub on Thursday evening.

The event featured the debut of Velvet Oatmeal Porter, named after the dog, Velvet, who was also on the climb and helped keep the group warm after the climbers were injured.

It was held at the Lucky Lab in Northwest Portland, located at 1945 NW Quimby St. across from Dove Lewis. Donations will go to the search and rescue groups that helped.

Christina Redl and two other climbers, Milwaukie school teacher Matty Bryant and Wilsonville school teacher Kate Hanlon fell at Illumination Saddle, at approximately the 8,500 level of Mt. Hood last month.

They went over a ledge and tumbled an estimated 400 to 500 feet down the mountain, then waited for help in whiteout conditions curled up in sleeping bags with Velvet, who rescuers said played a vital role in the ordeal.

Redl was treated for head injuries and released but is still recovering.

“The eight of us felt the best thing we could do with the media attention would be to raise money for the people that saved our friends' butts -- a large scale fundraiser will be our 'thank you' effort to the search and rescue organizations,” the climbers said in an e-mail.
