Fareless Square to continue -- for now

TriMet isn't backing away from its noted Fareless Square in downtown Portland just yet.
After a beating and other high-profile incidents on the MAX light-rail system, General Manager Fred Hansen talked about cutting back the service. Fareless Square allows bus and light-rail riders free trips in downtown Portland and adjacent shopping districts.
Hansen talked about limiting it to daytime hours. Some said requiring fares at night would give officers an easier time handling troublemakers. But many condemned the idea as a retreat from a strategy that drew national attention.
After evaluating more than 700 comments, Hansen says the idea will become part of a comprehensive review over the next few months.
TriMet will continue offering free rides inside the area known as Fareless Square in the meantime.
Fareless Square stretches from downtown Portland to Lloyd Center. Riders have to pay to use TriMet in all other areas.
Communications director Mary Fetsch said TriMet could save about half a million dollars by charging riders but the final decision would be based on safety, not money.
Several public hearings were scheduled to discuss the issue and this statement released by TriMet on Friday.
