Most families cook a traditional turkey or ham for the holidays but we always wanted Grandma’s chicken fried steak. The smell, sound and taste of my favorite dish from her kitchen is something I will never forget. This is how they do it in Texas.

Grandma Thelma’s Chicken Fried Steak

  • Round steak
  • Flour
  • Oil
  • Water
  • Salt & Pepper

Trim all the fat from the steak, and run through a tenderizer twice. Cut into pieces - whatever size you want. Soak the meat in ice cold water for at least an hour (up to overnight) Remove each piece individually and season with pepper and meat tenderizer (McCormick’s is what she used).

Coat the seasoned cold meat in flour, making sure to coat both sides really well. Immediately dip in hot oil (use a big, deep cast iron skillet). Fry each side, only turning once..

Drain on paper towels.

Probably not the healthiest meal for your Holiday but maybe the tastiest. Enjoy!
