PORTLAND -- Dozens of people made a difference in one Southeast Portland neighborhood by giving an urban farm makeover.
A local non-profit called Proud Ground paired up with Wells Fargo volunteers Saturday to help a first-time home buyer install garden beds, a chicken coop and an orchard on her new half-acre lot.
Proud Ground helped the in-home preschool owner Melissa Schaefer realize her dreams.
“For someone like Melissa, who has a stable job steady income, she can get a mortgage,” said Proud Ground’s Kathy Armstrong, “She just can’t get a $250,000 mortgage, which is the median home price today in Portland. So now she has her first home and a place for her preschool.”
“This is beyond what I ever thought was possible,” Schaefer told KGW.
In just one day, with a whole lot of elbow grease, her entire property was transformed.
