PORTLAND – Independence Day is near and fireworks stands will be opening up all across Oregon on Sunday.
Friday morning the state fire marshal's office and Portland firefighters demonstrated how hot some fireworks can burn.
“We recommend you use wood-core sparklers, because the wire-core type burns at 1,200 degrees,” said Oregon Fire Marshal Mark Wallace. "That's hot enough to melt glass.”
Over the past five years, there were 824 firework-related fires in Oregon and more than 111 injuries.
Under Oregon law, illegal fireworks can be seized and offenders can be fined up to $500 for each violation. Portland police and fire inspectors will team up to respond to reports of illegal fireworks.
