PORTLAND - Two softball teammates from Tigard are back on the field after E.coli bacteria almost killed them. Now they’re working to raise money for the hospital that put them back on the field.

“They saved our lives there so of course we want to give back,” said Bailey Marshall as she tossed a softball with her teammate Vanessa Brown.

The two had to be hospitalized last Spring after drinking E.coli contaminated raw milk.

“They were very, very sick,” said Dr. David Rozansky at Doernbecher Children’s Hosptial.

Bailey spent a month in the hospital being treated for kidney failure and other complications. Vanessa was there for two months.

“She was on dialysis for more than a month and more than 80 percent of her intestines were destroyed,” said her father.

“She was as sick as I’ve ever seen anyone who recovered,” added Rozansky.

Watching their daughters toss the ball and take turns at the plate is something their parents wouldn’t have thought possible five months ago.

“When I look at her, I see a miracle,” said Steve Brown, “When she woke up and learned her story, she wanted to do something.”

With the expertise of pitching coach Sue Oran and the Portland area softball community the teens are putting on a softball tournament Saturday at Hillsboro Stadium.

Bailey and Vanessa hope to raise $20,000 to buy two 24 hour blood pressure monitors for Doernbecher.

“We are honored to have our team supported by a whole softball team and really many teams,” remarked Dr. Rozansky.
