BELLEVUE, Wash. --  A Bellevue woman has filed suit alleging tainted cheese put her on her deathbed.

30-year-old Merrill Behnke filed the suit on Monday, alleging Ricotta Salata cheese, distributed by Auburn Based Peterson Cheese, caused her hospitalization in August.

The young mother says she woke up one day and “I had a neck ache, back ache, 102 degree fever.  Very sick.”

Behnke says she was later diagnosed with meningitis and that it was prompted by Listeria bacteria.

“The doctors said it was touch and go, that they almost lost me a couple of times,” says Behnke.

The wife, and mother of a 10-month old, says she later traced it back to the cheese which was used in a family meal.  The Ricotta was part of a recall earlier this month, after the CDC says it was connected to 15 illnesses nationwide.

The New York company, Forever Cheese, which imported the product did not return a call or email for comment.  Chris Morrow, HR Manager with Peterson Cheese said Tuesday “We have no comment until we have the chance to review the official documentation.”

The suit seeks unspecified damages, alleging physical and mental distress.
