PORTLAND – While some kids are jetting off to tropical destinations with their families for spring break, others are learning the ins and outs of working at a local farm.
During the spring break camp at Zenger Farm in Southeast Portland, kids learn what it takes to grow dozens of crops and raise livestock, including chickens.
They also get to run around the bucolic 26-acre farm, taste new foods and try out the tire swing.
“I hear them talking about different plant parts that they discovered in the field,” said Allison O’Sullivan, Educational Director at Zenger Farm. “They bring them into the kitchen and make food – really a farm-to-fork connection.”
And if the campers don’t like a certain food, they also learn how to politely decline a bite by saying, “It’s not for me.”
